If you’re looking for a versatile compressor that covers all the basses and provides extra functionality like analog-style saturation and external sidechain, H-Comp is a must-have. The offer comes from Waves Audio and Wildcrow, a music producer and YouTube personality. H-Comp has a list price of $179 (athough it’s almost always on sale for $29) but you can get it for FREE until February 12th. These two features are the perfect combo for creating groovy side-chained basslines that are perfectly in tempo with your project. Lastly, H-Comp has an external side-chain input and a BPM-sync release function. You can use the Punch feature in combination with parallel processing (easy to do with the included Mix knob) to create heavy-hitting drums. This is essential for heavily compressed drums. This control allows the transients to pass through, so that the signal remains punchy even with fast attack settings. However, H-Comp features one additional knob labeled Punch, and it’s not hard to guess what it does. The Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Mix, and Output controls are self-explanatory, so there’s no need to cover them in detail. The other control paramaters are exactly what you’d expect to find in a typical compressor. The interface lets you choose between four analog saturation modes, but you can also switch this feature off if you prefer a fully transparent sound. It works great on vocals and bass, thanks to the subtle analog saturation that helps these elements stand out in a busy mix. H-Comp is quick and easy to use, so I often use it as the first insert on individual tracks. I currently use it alongside DC1A and TDR Molotok, as this compressor trio covers all of my dynamic range compression needs. I used H-Comp extensively after getting it for free in 2018 and it quickly became one of my go-to compressor plugins. H-Comp is a hybrid compressor that emulates the non-linear behavior of various analog components like tubes, transformers, and transistors. Waves Audio and Wildcrow offer the H-Comp compressor plugin as a FREE download for a limited time.
